Can Periods Cause Headaches?

Headaches are one of the most common maladies in the world. Despite their prevalence, doctors still don’t know exactly what causes them or why some people suffer from more headaches than others.  Also up for debate is whether having your period can cause a headache.

Can periods cause headaches?

Periods can cause a wide range of symptoms which are uncomfortable and painful.  Headaches are listed as one of these symptoms.

However, there’s no definitive evidence that suggests that having your period causes headaches. Many people who suffer from migraines experience more problems during their period, but there isn’t enough research to prove a link between the two.

Why could periods cause headaches?

Headaches are caused by lots of things, and yours might not just be because you’re on your period. It’s possible that headaches are caused by any of the below factors:

Hormonal changes

Each month your hormones change to prepare your body for pregnancy.  All of these hormonal changes can stress the body which may cause you to get a headache or migraine.

Stress

Not only do all hormonal changes cause stress, but there is no denying the fact that periods can leave you feeling anxious and uncomfortable.  This stress could lead to headaches.

Sleep deprivation

Your body needs at least eight hours of sleep each night, but if you get less  than this you will feel tired and lethargic.  In fact, not only is it possible that you’ll get a headache from sleep deprivation, but insomnia can also cause migraines. If you sleep less during your period, or in the run up to your period, you may experience a headache.

Not eating properly

You need to eat a well-balanced diet.  If you deprive yourself of sleep, fail to eat regular meals and do not drink enough water this can cause headaches.

Iron deficiency

During your period, you shed the lining of your uterus which means you expel blood. Reduced iron in your body can cause fatigue and headaches. Make sure you are getting enough iron either through supplements or your diet.

Dehydration

When the body is dehydrated, it is more likely to be stressed which can lead to headaches.  Drink plenty of water and ensure that you are hydrated at all times.

While your period isn’t necessarily causing a headache, you may find yourself more prone to them at certain times in your cycle. For example, if you’re both experiencing hormone changes and you’re dehydrated, you are more likely to get a headache.
